Part 9: Steampunk Edition
Nissin Japan visited the cosplay amusement spaces "HACOSTADIUM OSAKA", "HACOSTADIUM cosset Osaka Nipponbashi", and "HACOSTADIUM cosset Ikebukuro Main Store"! We held a photoshoot using Nissin strobes at Hacostadium, where you can shoot in a variety of situations! In this series, we would like to introduce the photos we took and how we took them. In Part 9, we will introduce photos taken in the Steampunk area at HACOSTADIUM OSAKA.▼Click here for this session's photos!▼

The blue and green walls create a cool atmosphere.
Now, let's take a look at the shooting method.
*Please note that the booth was shot before a renovation, so the current structure may differ slightly.
Shooting Method
First, this is what the scene looked like using only the ambient room lighting. You can see that the wall itself has no color when lit only by room lights. When we shoot this to reveal the strobe light used, it looks like this...
Color has been added! We are using strobe light to add color to the walls. Now, let's look at the lighting details.
We used three strobes.
(1) Di700 with ROGUE Grid 45°, Power 1/64(2) Di700 direct with blue color filter, Power 1/16
(3) i40 direct with green color filter, Power 1/4
(3) i40 direct with green color filter, Power 1/4
For the main light (1), I attached a ROGUE grid and aimed it at the model from the front at an angle.
The strobe on the right is the main light (1). The strobe next to it, positioned between the light and the model, is the one with the blue filter (2). I aimed the main light at an angle to prevent light from spilling onto the background. If light reaches the background, the wall will become too bright, making it difficult for the color filter's effect to show up. Furthermore, by attaching a grid, the light becomes a spotlight, allowing me to illuminate only the model.
This is the strobe (2). You can see the light is blue. It is aimed directly at the wall behind the model.
Strobe (3) is an i40, placed directly on the floor and aimed at the left wall. The i40 comes with a stand, so you can place it anywhere. When placing it on the floor, be careful not to trip over it! As for the color filter, since the i40 body is small, the rubber band that comes with the ROGUE kit was too loose, so I attached it at an angle... It might be easier to use a rubber band that fits the i40 or use perma-cel tape to attach it.We shot in the Steampunk area at HACOSTADIUM OSAKA this time. By using color filters on your strobes, you can freely change the colors of your shooting location. For example, if you want to take something different from everyone else in the same spot, or if the background feels a bit plain and you want an accent, color filters are a huge help! The results are vibrant, and I think they pair very well with cosplay photography. Also, while we used three lights here, as you increase the number of lights, you might find that light hits unexpected places, which can lead to issues. Especially when using color filters, you often need to intentionally keep certain areas dark so the filter's colors show up effectively. If you plan your lighting by being conscious of where you want the light to hit and how far the light is currently reaching, you can prevent unnecessary light spill. Multi-strobe lighting with color filters is a bit challenging, but the final photos are very interesting! Please try experimenting with different lighting setups.
