[Nissin Seminar Report Vol. 1] Macro Photography: Water Drop Edition @ Osaka
シェアする
For the first time ever, Nissin Japan held a macro photography workshop in Osaka on September 15th!
Thanks to everyone, it was a huge success and very well-received! We received such passionate requests to "please hold this in Tokyo too!" that I truly felt it was well worth the effort of planning it. Thank you to everyone who participated!
For this Macro Photography ~Water Drop Edition~ @Osaka, with the cooperation of Tamron Co., Ltd. and Velbon Co., Ltd., we were able to provide:
As the name suggests, the indispensable macro lens for macro photography, the "SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD";
The "Geo Carmagne E Series" (link) and "Geo Carmagne N Series" (link), tripods that are also essential for macro photography;
And the "Super Mag Slider," an adjuster perfect for precise composition and focus adjustment.
It was the ultimate equipment setup!
[Part 1] 10:00 – 12:30 "Let's Try Water Drop Photography! Part 1: The World of Fluff and Water Drops" First, our instructor, acha, gave a talk on how to handle and preserve fluff (seeds).
Collecting fluff on your travels, putting it in glass cans, and labeling them also seems like a great way to preserve travel memories.
The fluff brought for this session was from Chiba!
She gave a demonstration while skillfully setting up the photography station.
Everyone was enthusiastically filming the setup process with their smartphones and cameras.
The first hurdle was firmly fixing the delicate fluff so it stands on its own, and then placing a water drop on it with a dropper...
Tweezers and clay were indispensable. She thoroughly taught us the tricks of how to use them effectively!
Once the fluff was set, the next step was composition. People went through trial and error, struggling to find the focus, having the water drop fall while moving the camera, or worrying about background color distribution and the degree of blur.
Participants worked in pairs, and everyone was friendly and engaged throughout the shoot.
[Part 2] 14:00 – 16:30 "Let's Try Water Drop Photography! Part 2: The Macro World Created by Water Drops" This time, the two parts covered different content, but 70% of the attendees participated in both! Thank you very much.
Since people were attending both, I felt even more determined to ensure they took home solid results!
The setup for Part 2 was slightly larger, but the items used were all inexpensive and easy to obtain.
Their potential uses are endless! (Some were even used in ways slightly different from their intended purposes...? We'll call that artistic license!)
Everyone struggled with the timing of the shutter! It really trains your dynamic visual acuity.
Because capturing that split second is so difficult, the joy when you succeed is all the greater.
Whether it was using color filters or manually controlling the beam angle to adjust the light coverage, everyone grew closer, going beyond their assigned pairs. I realized that the inability to ever take the exact same photo twice is part of the fun of water drop photography.

〈Photo by acha〉
Water drop photography reveals many different expressions depending on how the strobe light is aimed.
Choosing the colors and patterns for the background is also part of the fun.
We received a wonderful compliment from acha, saying, "These are photos you can't take without a strobe!"
I truly hope that even a little bit of the fun of using strobes was conveyed to everyone.
And guess what! To everyone in the Kanto region, the wait is over.
The next [Macro Photography] Beginner Strobe Workshop ~Water Drop Edition~ has been decided for December in Koenji, Tokyo!!
Details regarding the workshop will be announced on the Nissin Japan website later, so be sure to check it out!
Please continue to support Nissin Japan's strobe workshops!
